In the thick of ADR...

Because even the best boom operator can't rid a location of heavy background noise (traffic, generators, etc.), there exists the "Automated Dialog Replacement" stage of filmmaking. This post-production phase is commonly referred to as "looping." It involves calling back all of your talented actors and actresses, placing them in a booth with a mic and a playback screen where they re-record the dialog, hopefully maintaining or enhancing the original performance. This can be a very painstaking, but very rewarding process. But don't take my word for it...
